Today, the MV GOLDEN BRILLIANT, a 225 m long bulk carrier came in at sunrise, underway to EMO terminal, Mississippihaven in Port of Rotterdam. We were assisted by two tugboats, the BUGSIER 12 and MULTRATUG 3. It was cold and very windy, but the Philippino crew dit an outstanding job!
MT DELTA PIONEER sailed from Europoort, in Port of Rotterdam to sea. On arrival at the pilot station the Pilot Station Vessel PROCYON was on station to pick up the pilot from this 250 m long vessel.
The MURCIA MAERSK is a ship from the Maersk Triple-E class. They are 400 meters long with a capacity of approximately 18.000 TEU. The 59 meters wide wheelhouse is enclosed from side to side, which makes it very comfortable to sail and manoeuvre these ships in and out of port.
The American Eagle Tankers company is operating a number of shuttle tankers in Europe. They are frequent callers to the port of Rotterdam. Today, the EAGLE BERGEN ( 276 x 46 m) was shifting from het Vopak berth in Oilharbour 7 to the dolphins 82 in the Calandkanaal. She is fitte with a number of bow- and stern trusters and has enclosed bridge wings. A very useful feature in wintertime!
It’s not always calm seas, helicopters and fast speedboats. In the third weekend storm this year, the pilot embarks MV VERA D by fast launch craft of the Pilot Station Vessel PROCYON. It takes professional teamwork by Pilotboat crew, the ship VERA D and VTS to board these ships in the harshest conditions in a violent Northsea. Well done and thanks to all players involved!
During high wind conditions it is sometimes required to transfer pilots from the Pilot Station Vessels to incoming ships. In this case the NHV Dauphin Helicopter came to collect a pilot an d luggage form the PROCYON at Maascenter pilot station.
When coming alongside with the tender to pick up our colleague from an outbound ship, it appeared the spreader on the pilot ladder was broken. This is an example of how dangerous our job can be. It it had not been noticed by the tender crew and if the pilot had stepped on it, he would certainly have ended in the cold Northsea!
The inbound container vessel VISTULA MAERSK , 200 m long, was inbound to APMT terminal in the Europahaven, in Port of Rotterdam , assisted by 2 tugs MARS and ADVENTURE. Excellent and very professional job by ships crew, bridgeteam, tugs and linesmen.
The recent storm Ciara has forced us to use the helicopter for boarding ships for an extended period of time since this weekend. The inbound MT RYMAN , 250 m long and drawing 13,6m deep came into port today, underway to BP jetty 1 in Oil harbour 6 in Port of Rotterdam . Thanks to the professional crew and bridgeteam of RYMAN it was a pleasant and smooth operation from start to finish.
The job of the Maritime Pilot involves transferring from the piloted ship to a tender or fast launch vice versa. In the below video the outbound ELBCARRIER is disembarked at Maascenter pilot station, on a winter night. All procedures and safety measures are in place to make this critical operation succesfull.
